De Majo Contemporary - Traditional craftsmanship
De Majo offers young designers the opportunity to express their creativity. The traditional company remains innovative and competitive. De Majo lamps combine tradition with modernity, elegance with contemporary design.
However, the roots of the company as a manufacturer of high quality crystal glass are still clear. For example, the Charlotte pendant lamp, whose noble lampshades are made by the finest crystal glass that refracts light multifaceted. The classic material is brought in a clear, minimalist design by De Majo. So it works harmoniously with any interior.
The Carre floor lamp has a slim structure and a high quality lampshade made of opal glass. The light is emitted particularly pleasant and atmospheric. By the integrated dimmer the mood can be varied as desired.
The founder Guide de Majo opened in 1947 a glass factory on the island of Murano. A very special place with a unique history, as regards the traditional glass blowers craft. To preserve the secrets, the rulers of Venice issued a decree that compelled all glassblowers of the lagoon city to transfer their ovens and workshops on the island of Murano. Officially this was done for fire protection reasons. More likely it was that the unique techniques should be protected from other nations and royal houses. Murano Glass was finally in the 13th century a coveted commodity.
Until the 15th century, the glass artfully crafted became the main sources of income of the lagoon city. The unique quality of the "Cristallo" called clear glass is today unfortunately hardly clear as much of the work time not survived and exists only in still lives of the Renaissance on.
In the 20th century Murano glass experienced a special appreciation by the Italian Government. By public museums and special materials and training centers, Italy is trying to protect its cultural heritage. Thanks to these measures, the traditional handicraft flourishes again and has such an important role as the famous Bohemian crystal.
The inimitable quality of the glass is still alive in the designs of De Majo. Past designs and techniques have been interpreted for the contemporary and relevant for the international success of the company.
